Shout Out to Goodie Boxers for REAL popolio 2nd Anniversary Dance Party!

This is has been a long time coming, but before COMPLETELY FULLY REALLY shutting down I wanted to make sure to get this post out there. This is the last 1 of 2 posts I will be writing for THE REAL popolio. Promise! ūüôā

I intended to post this closer to the date of the event, but things came up and I never was able to get around to it.

These are all the artists and organizations that donated items (CDs, stickers,¬†gift cards, and other goodies; hence the name)¬†for the goodie boxes for THE REAL popolio’s 2nd Year Anniversary B&W Party featuring 1990s pop music by local¬†DJ, HOT BRITCHES!,¬†that went down on Saturday,¬†September 11, 201o at local mediterranean restaurant, Phara’s. ¬†

I made 2 versions of the flyer.  See them here and here at my personal Facebook Page.

So a boisterous SHOUT OUT and gigantic THANK YOU to (in no particular order):

San Antonio indie band, LEDASWAN; NYC-based collaborative alternative¬†musicians collective, PASSION PROJECT; long-time¬†industry guy,¬†RICH OVERTON¬†and his RJO ARTIST RELATIONS & MANAGEMENT (sent us stuff from multiple artists he reps); Boston pop/R&B girl group, JADA, ATX’s own rockers; THE MIDGETMEN; Dallas musician of many hats, CLAY PENDERGRASS;¬†LA-based singer-songwriter, BILL CURD; also¬†LA-based dance rock diva, DEBBY HOLIDAY; ATX electro hip hoppers, ONE STEP PROGRAM; NYC indie¬†pop/rock¬†outfit, LOVE & LOGIC;¬†Chicago pop rocker,¬†SCOTT WESLEY; NYC-based folk rocker, JON SANDLER; ATX old school soulstress, LISA MARSHALL; ATX power popster, PHIL DUTRA; and local Chinese food restaurant at Dobie Mall, HOA HOA (for donating gift cards).¬†

Better late than never.¬† I don’t think I’ve forgotten anyone, but if I have, you know who you are and an equally boisterous¬†SHOUT OUT and gigantic THANK YOU to you as well!¬† ‘Nuff said.

OUTlander TV – Interview with God-Des & She

During Austin PRIDE on Saturday, September 10, 2011, I interviewed some of the featured artists of the inaugural OUTlander Fall Festival.  In addition to this post, I created my own YouTube Page to feature them.

Here’s the fourth of the series with ATX hip hop soul duo, God-Des & She, who were the Austin PRIDE 2011 HEADLINER at the OUTlander Fall Festival.  Unlike the other interviews in this series,  I spoke to God-Des & She BEFORE their house-bringing-down festival closing set on the Empire Stage at Lipstick 24.

Thanks to Melissa Martin, Director of Operations for bMUSEd Entertainment,¬†for the opportunity &¬†God-Des &¬†She¬†for being regular peeps, so funny they¬†had me rollin’, and for being so generous with their time as I know¬†they are busy, busy ladies. ;)¬†

What you see is not actually the entire interview, I spoke to them right up until they had to go on stage (unbeknownst to me), so we were suddenly surprised so they could hurry up and go tear the roof off.  It was all pretty exciting.

As stated in the interview, God-Des & She will be honored with their own official day in Austin, as proclaimed by Austin City Mayor, Lee Leffingwell, on Thursday, November 3, 2011.  Festivities and a performance are scheduled to take place at City Hall.  Go to the Facebook Event Page for details.

Music Video: God-Des & She “Stand Up (Goodbye DADT)”

God-Des & She had this to say:

“In honor of DADT being repealed on September 20, 2011, we asked our fans to share their stories and pictures with us.¬† The stories they sent touched us so much that we decided to produce a video in their honor.¬† We were just saying how sometimes you don‚Äôt know why you write a song until years later.¬† We wrote a song called ‚ÄúStand Up‚ÄĚ in 2007 and we now believe this is the reason why.¬†¬†Please share this video far and wide.¬† We were so inspired and we hope you will be, too.”

16. Stefani Vara 20Q Part 1
The Year 3 Number 16 spot goes to Stefani Vara.¬† I just recently posted a new follow-up 5Q with her¬†with a remix of her new single, “In the Middle of the Night.”¬† This particular interview is actually a re-post of an article I wrote for Popular Hispanics.¬† In its original inception it was always a 20 question interview.¬† Whereas it originally appeared as one interview at PH, I split it up into two parts here.¬† Part 1 is what makes the countdown.¬† I did include a¬†stream of the original version of her latest¬†song when I reposted here, which did not appear¬†in the¬†original PH¬†article.

I think Stefani Vara is gonna’ do some big things.¬† I’m not just saying that because she’s a sexy Latina.¬† Not to say she hasn’t already done some things, but I foresee bigger, brighter, and better in her future.¬† Hopefully, I didn’t just jinx her.¬† All kidding aside, I think there is a lane there for her; it already exists, but I think she’d be combining a few lanes into one with her Latin/pop/dance music.¬†¬† It could be said that J. Lo did it before and Kat DeLuna is doing it now.¬†¬†While J.Lo was more R&B/Urban and Kat brings in a¬†more world music sound, I think Stefani will have a specific¬†H-Town and overall¬†Texas flavor with more live instrumentation.¬† I could be wrong, but those are my thoughts on the matter.¬† ‘Nuff said on that.

Now, I’m gonna’ let you in on a little secret, when I¬†do interviews¬†for other sites, I’m just adapting my Questions for feature format to their specifications.¬† It might have a different title and look a little different than what I post here, but it starts as so many questions for so-and-so artist.

Read¬†the original Popular Hispanics interview here.¬† See the Part¬†1¬† Monday, April 4, 2011¬†re-post here ‚ÄĒ¬†20Q for Stefani Vara Part 1 — H-Town.¬† Here’s Part 2.¬† It includes the first single of her yet to be titled forthcoming sophomore release, ‚ÄúIn the Middle of the Night.‚ÄĚ

16. Levi Kreis pop quiz
Tony Winner Levi Kreis was the subject of a popolio pop quiz way back in 2009 before Million Dollar Quartet and his Tony.¬† It’s exciting to be able to say that you interviewed or featured someone before they achieved some sort of recognized greatness (not to say that they weren’t great bef0re) or to say that you did it back “in the beginning”¬† of their career or that you “knew them when…” before everybody else.¬† Well, I can say that THE REAL popolio knew Levi Kreis before.

His pop quiz interview, posted on Friday,¬† May 8, 2009, takes the Year 1 Number 16 spot.¬† It was the first pop quiz of May 2009.¬† The second posted on Friday, May 22, 2009 and featured El Paso’s Jayden’s Playground.

See the original post here ‚ÄĒ Levi Kreis pop quiz.¬† It includes his song, ‚ÄúGonna Be Alright,‚ÄĚ and the Whisper’s video for ‚ÄúRock Steady.‚ÄĚ

19. Wayna pop quiz & Black Moth Super Rainbow [Tobacco] 5Q
This is the first Year 1 tie and also the first of the special SXSW 2009 popolio pop quiz interviews to show up on this countdown.  There have already been two ties on the Year 3 countdown as well as four of 10 SXSW 2011 pop quizzes.

In Year 1, I only did 5 SXSW pop quizzes and posted them for one week, Monday through Friday, during a SXSW Week, if you will, prior to the actual SXSW Week.  I also went to most of their showcases, took pictures, and posted them as popolio show pic-olios.

Wayna was a 2009 Grammy Nominee for her song “Lovin You (Music)” featuring Koyaki and ran into some publicized airport trouble in Houston that year as well, so I’m not surprised her interview has found a place on this countdown.¬† See the accompanying show pic-olio here.¬† I also did a popolio podcast interview with¬† her.¬† Listen to that chat here.

The 5Q with Tobacco of Black Moth Super Rainbow (BMSR), was in anticipation of an ATX show at the Mohawk.  Coincidentally, I had just done the 2-Part 20Q Birds Barbershop interview (of which Part 1 got the Year1 Number 26 spot) and they were kicking off their Birds East (Summer) Concert Series and giving away tickets to a few shows including this BMSR show.  There is also a pic-olio of this show here.

With the Questions for feature, I research the artist beforehand and really try to tailor the questions to them, their music, and¬† their experiences.¬† I try to touch on something poignant or personal or special if something like that is included in their press materials.¬† In some cases, questions can be open to interpretation and I don’t always know what direction an artist is going to go in.¬† In this case, Tobacco used a lot of humor in the way he responded.

See the original Thursday, March 19, 2009 Wayna post here ‚ÄĒ Wayna pop quiz — SXSW Artist.¬† It includes her song, ‚ÄúDaydream,‚ÄĚ and a Beatles performance video of “Yesterday.‚ÄĚ
