23. The Jezabels pop quiz
This is the second pop quiz interview from my 10 special SXSW 2011 pop quizzes. BRAIDS took the Number 30 spot with theirs. I just posted the Jezabels‘ latest video,”Endless Summer,” about a week ago and linked their pop quiz to it. That may have helped move them to the Number 23 spot.
On this year’s SXSW pop quizzes, I included a brief one sentence description of each featured act and all the details of their SXSW showcases at the top of those posts.
See the original Friday, March 13, 2011 post here — The Jezabels pop quiz interview – SXSW Artist. It includes their song, “Mace Spray,” and the Beastie Boys’ video for “Sabotage.”

Australian quartet, the Jezabels, make broad moody pop that expounds on gender and relationships with undeniably infectious hooks.

This, That, or the Other
1. Underground OR Mainstream? This and That (Both)
2. Maintain Artistic Integrity and Vision OR Make a lot of Money? (OR Both)??? This (Maintain Artistic Integrity)
3. Studio OR Stage? That (Stage)
4. Spirituality OR Hedonism? Other
5. Make Love, Have Sex, OR %$*!? This (Make Love)
Fill in the Blank
6. Music is my means to express strange things.
7. I’m musically inspired by a mixture of W. G. Sebald and Gillian Welch…
8. If I could have made any music video it would have been a mockumentary by Chris Lilley.
9. If I was a super hero I’d be honest.
10. Sex, Drugs, and Rock & Roll should change to No Life, No Health, and Fun Sometimes.
Short Answer
11. I make music because: I don’t really know – I just started with friends and four years later we’re still doing it…It’s really fun, I suppose?
12. I want my fans to: Stay the same – I think that we have awesome fans.
13. If I could only share one thing about myself it would be: I’m a red under the bed.
14. Wild Card! A customer bet a butcher that he couldn’t get the meat off the top shelf. The butcher replied, “No. The steaks are too high.”
15. I want my musical legacy to be: A great collection of albums and a lot of great memories of our live shows. Nothing more.
The unclarity of question Number 5 through these SXSW pop quizzes continues. I choose the Beastie Boys’ “Sabotage” for the Jezabels. I think someone who appreciates mockumentaries can appreciate this video.
