This is has been a long time coming, but before COMPLETELYFULLYREALLY shutting down I wanted to make sure to get this post out there. This is the last 1 of 2 posts I will be writing for THE REAL popolio. Promise!
I intended to post this closer to the date of the event, but things came up and I never was able to get around to it.
These are all the artists and organizations that donated items (CDs, stickers, gift cards, and other goodies; hence the name) for the goodie boxes for THE REAL popolio’s 2nd Year Anniversary B&W Party featuring 1990s pop music by local DJ, HOT BRITCHES!, that went down on Saturday, September 11, 201o at local mediterranean restaurant, Phara’s.
So a boisterousSHOUT OUT and gigantic THANK YOU to (in no particular order):
San Antonio indie band, LEDASWAN; NYC-based collaborative alternative musicians collective, PASSION PROJECT; long-time industry guy, RICH OVERTON and his RJO ARTIST RELATIONS & MANAGEMENT (sent us stuff from multiple artists he reps); Boston pop/R&B girl group, JADA, ATX’s own rockers; THE MIDGETMEN; Dallas musician of many hats, CLAY PENDERGRASS; LA-based singer-songwriter, BILL CURD; also LA-based dance rock diva, DEBBY HOLIDAY; ATX electro hip hoppers, ONE STEP PROGRAM; NYC indie pop/rock outfit, LOVE & LOGIC; Chicago pop rocker, SCOTT WESLEY; NYC-based folk rocker,JON SANDLER; ATX old school soulstress,LISA MARSHALL; ATX power popster, PHIL DUTRA; and local Chinese food restaurant at Dobie Mall,HOA HOA (for donating gift cards).

Better late than never. I don’t think I’ve forgotten anyone, but if I have, you know who you are and an equally boisterousSHOUT OUT and gigantic THANK YOU to you as well! ‘Nuff said.
Check out Boston-based pop/R&B girl group, JADA’s, latest video, “This Party’s On Fire.” It’s produced by Rio and directed by Vassili Shields. They have a history with THE REAL popolio as they’ve been featured on more than one occasion.
They made MY TOP 30: Year 3 Posts of ALL-TIME! with the Extras Call Out I posted for this very video at Number 9 tied with Dallas/Garland hip pop/R&B artist, B-May’spop quiz interview.
They’re also the only act to give us a video B-Day SHOUT OUT for our September 15, 2011 3rd Year Anniversary. See it here!
THE REAL popolio turned 3 Years Old on September 15, 2011. And, though we’re officially closing our doors TODAY, Boston-based pop/R&B girl group, JADA (that we’ve featured on many occasions through our collective 3 year history), were nice enough to give us our ONLY video B-Day SHOUT OUT at their September 18, 2011 Release Party for their latest video, “This Party’s On Fire.”
9. JADA “This Party’s On Fire” Video Extras Call & B-May pop quiz This is our third Year 3 tie. See the first here and second here. The Number 9 spot is shared by Boston-based pop/R&B female vocal group, JADA, and Garland/Dallas-based hip pop/R&B artist, B-May.
First, is the JADA call for extras for their latest video, “This Party’s On Fire,” that will be released at the end of the month. It’s an interesting sort of post to make the countdown because it’s not the typical kind of post I usually feature and it features an act outside of the Austin/Texas area where I am based.
JADA is one of those acts that I developed a working relationship with and featured on more than one occasion in somewhat of a recurring capacity. It was mostly during Year 2 and, unfortunately, Year 2 material is no longer available online. That withstanding, the relationship persisted and that is why I was more than happy to post this call for them.
Austin used to be called the third coast (not sure if that’s so anymore) in the film industry because of all the filmmaking that went on here in addition to in L.A. and New York. Boston kind of became my third coast (in addition to Austin and Texas) with this blog. I spent a summer north of there for an internship and I fell in love. A Texas boy in a New England town, it was bound to happen.
Though I have consciously featured Boston artists, I didn’t normally highlight that they were from there. In keeping with the throughline of the blog, I highlighted those that were Austin- and Texas-based, though secretly Boston was my third coast. In this case, I had to highlight the town because it is a call for extras and location is, obviously, important. Remember, though, I’ve featured local to international artists and indie to established artists as well, but because I live in Austin, grew up in El Paso, and am from Texas, I chose to include the cities from posts based in those regions in the titles of those posts.
Also, I’d like to point out that though there are a few artists that were featured more than once, in most cases, I only featured them once a month. I was very cognizant of the fact that I created a blog that was about featuring different artists. I didn’t want it to ever seem like THE REAL popolio had become the ‘whatever artist’ blog or website as all the artists featured already have their own official sites.
I also didn’t want visitors to think that it was always the same artists cycling through the content. Even if I had more than one feature pending for an artist, I would hold off on posting their next one the following month, if I had just posted one. If you look through the site, you’ll find a nice cross-section of artist types and artists genres.
B-May was the focus of my second January 2011 pop quiz interview. It posted on Friday, January 28, 2011. The focus of the first was Austin-based folk pop artist, Medicine Park, on Friday, January 14, 2011. That pop quiz interview already made an appearance on this countdown at the Year 3 Number 26 spot. Perhaps, mentioning B-May’s pop quiz in that post helped him climb to this spot.
B-May is an example of the artists from Texas where the city they’re based in is highlighted in the title of the post. With every artist, I would research what city they identified as being based in on their MySpace and/or Facebook Pages and/or official sites. If the artist was from Texas, it was important to me that I include the correct city they identify with and feel that they are representing. Note, in this case, it’s not just Dallas, it’s Garland/Dallas, which is part of the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex.
22. TsuShiMaMiRe 10Q & Elephant Sky pop quiz
This is our second Year 3 tie. See the first here. The Number 22 spot is shared by Japanese punk band, TsuShiMaMiRe, and Brooklyn-based folk pop artist, Elephant Sky.
This is the first Questions for post on the countdown not written by myself. It was written by one-time freelance contributor, Deanna Fierro. At the time, she was based in El Paso and TsuShiMaMiRe had a gig scheduled there.
She interviewed them the night of that show and even got a photographer to take pictures. So, there is also a show pic-olio associated with this interview. See the TsuShiMaMiRe pic-olio shot by Refractive Elements Studiohere. Deanna also reviewed the show here.
My thought with taking on Deanna was that, being from El Paso myself, I wanted to try to feature more El Paso Artists and happenings in the Sun City. In this case, it worked.
Elephant Sky was the focus of my second June 2011 pop quiz interview. It posted on Friday, June 24, 2011. The focus of the first was Kaydean on Friday, June 10, 2011. That pop quiz interview already made an appearance on this countdown at the Year 3 Number 25 spot. Perhaps, mentioning Elephant Sky’s pop quiz in that post helped her climb to this spot.
At some point, Brooklyn-based artists became common here at THE REAL popolio. Not sure why or how that is exactly. Don’t know if there is just a lot of musical talent in that particular New York borough or if it’s just coincidence.
In some cases, the artists I feature are connected to one another. I kind of work on referrals sometimes or I refer myself to a related artist. Or they see what’s come before and they find me. Either way, I ended up covering Austin, the rest of Texas, Boston a little bit (because I have an affinity for it), and Brooklyn through the years.

Fill in the Blank 6. Music is my anthem. 7. I’m musically inspired by emotion dictated by life’s every day experiences.

Name: Elephant Sky
Debut Release: Run, Run EP (Self-Released)
Release Date: September 1, 2010
This, That, or the Other
1. Underground OR Mainstream? Underground
2. Maintain Artistic Integrity and Vision OR Make a lot of Money? (OR Both)??? Maintain Artistic Integrity, but be able to relate to lots of people.
3. Studio OR Stage? Ooh, both are completely different and beautiful settings. I’d say Studio if I had to cause it’s where I can disappear for hours/days.
4. Spirituality OR Hedonism? Both. It depends on the day and my current mood. I’m awful at this section, it’s not so clear cut to me. Haha!
5. Make Love, Have Sex, OR %$*!? BOTH! I think I’d rather have Making Love if I HAD to choose, although with the right person you could be doing both at the same time, right?
Fill in the Blank
6. Music is my safety blanket.
7. I’m musically inspired by nature.
8. If I could have made any music video it would have been “Temazcal” by Monsters of Folk.
9. If I was a super hero I’d be Raven.
10. Sex, Drugs, and Rock & Roll should change to _________________, ________________, and __________________. (OR Not) Stay how it is!
11. I make music because: I need it. Everyone needs to find that one thing or place where they can drain the world from their pores and just be still. Music is mine.
12. I want my fans to: Love the life they’re living. The music I aspire to create is music that isn’t just notes or chords, but emotions and stories. I want that to translate.
13.If I could only share one thing about myself it would be: I’m most comfortable on a huge southern porch with a few of my closest friends making music than in an overcrowded house show somewhere in the city. 14. Wild Card! I kind of have an obsession with Taylor Swift that I hate admitting, but when no one’s home, I definitely dance around to her in my undies like I’m 13 again.
15. I want my musical legacy to be: That throughout the years my music is a constant journey that fans travel with me on.
The video Elephant Sky wishes she would have made!
